Your Pictures Are Your Life, Preserve Them - Online! by Steve Silver
Protecting photographs is detail-intensive and laborious. Protecting a photograph means preventing contact with acidic paper products, and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or PVA (polyvinyl acetate) plastic products. Such contact speeds decomposition. The acids from the paper will migrate to the photo, and PVC plastic gives off hydrogen-chloride gas which corrodes the photo. But the common, cheaper varieties of photo corners, photo enclosure, sheet protectors, binders, and scrapbooks all contain acid or PVC.
So, read product labels and make sure that what you buy is PVC and acid free. If photos are to be attached to paper, then make sure the manufacturer clearly promises that the paper is acid free. If the photos are to be placed in photo albums then buy albums with PVC-free plastic sheets (If the label does not disclose the type of plastic, then smell the product. PVC plastic can be identified by its strong, plastic odor). If labeling photos, use acid-free pencils. Protect photos from the acid in other photos by placing acid-free paper between layers. Help neutralize the acid by using a deacidification spray.
The above takes time. It takes money. It often means replacing current photo albums and scrapbooks. But, even if photographs are stored with acid-free and PVC-free products, decomposition still happens. Your personal photography will still fall apart, just more slowly. Damage can be caused by other agents, too: fire, a burst pipe, the intense heat of an attic, the mold and termites in a basement. Because of such dangers, photographs should also be digitally copies and then stored away from home, online.
Certain websites offer this service, such as Myheartwill.com. With this service also comes an opportunity to expand what nostalgia is protected because the site also hosts video and audio. So, for example, you might possess an old photograph of your grandfather when he sailed to Tahiti. Myheartwill.com can further encapsulate that memory with: a photo of the island necklace he bought you (when you were five), an audio recording of the stories from that adventure (as remembered by your grandfather or closest living relative. Perhaps your uncle remembers the details of how your grandfather survived the Tahitian typhoon), as well as a video recording of your brother sea-kayaking (which shows the love of the ocean carried forward two generations).
Protect your photographs from old age. Expand your capacity to archive memory. Try Myheartwill today!
